General Summary

The Technology Purchasing Agent / IT Support Technician is responsible for coordinating and managing all technology-related purchasing for Salish Kootenai College (SKC), ensuring that technology acquisitions align with institutional standards, budget requirements, and operational needs. This position serves as the primary point of contact for technology procurement, software licensing management, vendor coordination, inventory control, and asset tracking.

In addition to purchasing responsibilities, this position provides technical support for the SKC’s information technology infrastructure by installing, configuring, maintaining, and troubleshooting computers, printers, peripheral devices, and network-connected equipment across campus. The position assists faculty, staff, and students with technology-related issues and provides backup support for the IT Help Desk as needed.

The position requires a high degree of organization, customer service, technical knowledge, and the ability to manage multiple priorities while maintaining accurate purchasing and inventory records.

The employee must be capable of performing physically demanding work, including lifting and carrying heavy equipment, working from ladders and elevated locations, installing equipment above shoulder height, operating hand and power tools, and working indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

Technology Purchasing and Asset Management

  • Coordinate and process all technology purchases for SKC, including computers, printers, monitors, networking equipment, software, peripherals, audiovisual equipment, and related technology.
  • Research products, compare pricing, obtain vendor quotations, and recommend cost-effective technology solutions.
  • Work with departments to identify technology needs while ensuring compatibility with College standards.
  • Prepare purchase requests, quotes, requisitions, and supporting documentation in accordance with College purchasing policies.
  • Coordinate with vendors regarding pricing, availability, warranties, licensing, shipping, and returns.
  • Receive, inspect, inventory, and document incoming technology equipment.
  • Maintain accurate technology inventory and asset records.
  • Track hardware lifecycle and assist with equipment replacement planning.
  • Coordinate warranty claims, repairs, and equipment returns.
  • Maintain software license records and ensure license compliance.
  • Assist with the annual e-waste project to ensure the inventory is up-to-date.

Technical Support

  • Install, configure, maintain, and troubleshoot desktop computers, laptops, printers, scanners, and other peripheral devices.
  • Install operating systems, software applications, drivers, updates, and security patches.
  • Diagnose and resolve hardware and software issues.
  • Perform preventative maintenance on computer equipment and printers.
  • Install and replace hardware components including memory, storage devices, monitors, printers, and peripherals.
  • Assist with classroom and conference room technology installations.
  • Support audiovisual equipment as assigned.
  • Escalate complex technical issues to senior IT staff when appropriate.

Help Desk Support

  • Provide backup support for the SKC Help Desk.
  • Respond to support tickets in a professional and timely manner.
  • Document incidents, work completed, and resolutions using the SKC's IT Department ticketing system.
  • Provide excellent customer service to faculty, staff, students, and guests.
  • Educate users on proper technology use and security best practices.

Team Collaboration

  • Participate in Information Technology Services (ITS) team meetings, training sessions, and professional development opportunities.
  • Collaborate with other IT staff on technology deployments, upgrades, and special projects.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Computer Information Systems, Computer Science, or a closely related field; or
  • Three (3) years of progressively responsible experience in information technology support, technology purchasing, or a closely related field

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of computer hardware, operating systems, software installation, and troubleshooting.
  • Experience supporting Microsoft Windows and MacOS operating systems.
  • Knowledge of computer peripherals including printers, scanners, monitors, and mobile devices.
  • Familiarity with basic networking concepts and network-connected devices.
  • Understanding of technology purchasing processes, vendor relations, and inventory management.
  • Experience maintaining accurate records and managing technology assets.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills with attention to detail.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with faculty, staff, students, vendors, and the public.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple projects and meet deadlines.
  • Demonstrated commitment to excellent customer service.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull equipment weighing up to 75 pounds.
  • Ability to safely use ladders, hand tools, and power tools.
  • Ability to work in confined spaces, on rooftops, and at elevated locations.
  • Ability to work indoors and outdoors in all seasons and varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to bend, kneel, climb, stoop, and reach overhead for extended periods.
  • Possess a valid driver's license or have the ability to obtain one, and be eligible to operate College vehicles.
