General Summary
There are three main focus points of this position: (1) to instruct college level courses in the Life Sciences, such as: Introductory Chemistry, Fundamentals of General Chemistry, Fundamentals of Organic and Biological Chemistry (2) develop a Physical Chemistry course and (3) to build novel place-based research projects, mentor undergraduate students in research activities, write successful grants to support research with the intent to publish research in peer-reviewed journals.
The individual in this position will be involved in curriculum planning, development, and assessment, record keeping and student advising. He/she will also be expected to maintain regular, scheduled office hours (may be online), in order to advise and assist students.
All Life Sciences faculty are expected to maintain positive relationships with students, faculty, staff and administration, as well as to treat others with respect and dignity, recognizing the uniqueness of students, colleagues and the Salish Kootenai College.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
Instruction
Plan, prepare and develop course materials, such as syllabi, assignments, handouts and culturally relevant materials, in accord with SKC mission and goals.
Prepare and deliver lectures to students and hands-on laboratory experiences. Initiate, facilitate and moderate classroom discussions. Evaluate and grade students class work, assignments and papers.
Be responsible for student learning outcomes assessment for courses taught each quarter.
Collaborate with colleagues to address teaching issues.
Assist in curriculum development for courses.
Maintain scheduled office hours.
Interact with department members to plan, implement and participate in evaluation and assessment of the lab both during the course and after the quarter ends.
Research
Develop place-based undergraduate research projects
Seek funding opportunities and secure funding sources to support student research activities
Responsible for scientific output through presentations at scientific meetings and publications in peer reviewed journals
Advising and Service
Advise students on academic issues within the course.
Refer students to appropriate college and community resources.
Organize and engage in community service activities.
Minimum Qualifications:
Ph.D., with an emphasis in Chemistry, Physical Chemistry, or a closely related field of study.
Demonstrated experience and skill in teaching at undergraduate level in lab-based and lecture courses.
Demonstrated ability to function in a team setting and work cooperatively with faculty and staff.
Mentoring experience of undergraduate students in research projects.
Demonstrated ability to develop novel research projects and conduct research for publication.
Have knowledge of Salish Kootenai Tribes and the Mission and Goals of Salish Kootenai College.
Must have ability to work with individuals from diverse backgrounds and the ability to communicate through written, spoken and visual media.
Current legal standing to work in the US.
Preferable qualifications:
Post-doctoral work experience.
Demonstrated experience in grant writing and successful awards.
Experience with course-based undergraduate research experiences (CUREs).
Supervisory Responsibilities
Supervise students in the laboratory, as described above.
