Graduate Cultural Integration Specialist and Co-Instructor for the Integrative Indigenous Education option of SKC’s M.Ed. program

Job Description

The Salish Kootenai College Division of Education Division of Education is seeking a part-time temporary faculty member to work within the M.Ed. in C & I program for the duration of Cohort 3. Candidates must have successfully earned a minimum of a Master’s Degree or equivalency in a related field. Preference will be given to candidates who with expertise in Native Language Instruction and the cultures and histories of the Confederated Salish, Qlispe, and Ksanka Tribes. This is a part-time temporary position which will end at the close of Cohort 3, July, 2027. Candidates must be qualified to provide cultural protocols and support instruction in the seasonal round.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

·         Assist in review of course materials supporting cultural content and language integration across the Integrative Indigenous Education (IIE) option.

·         Provide support for teaching CSKT history and federal Indian policy in Indigenous Praxis course.

·         Support IIE Director in assuring course materials such as course curriculum, assignments, textbook selection, syllabi and materials are place- and community-based, as well as culturally sustaining and revitalizing for the program overall, and especially the Applied Indigenous Knowledge course series.

·         Support and model cultural protocols in M.Ed. program across 14 months June 2026 – July 2027

·         Support cultural encampments for Applied Indigenous Knowledge course series each of five quarters of the program, building knowledge from one term to the next in the context of the seasonal round.

·         Support and mentor individual students, as needed, with emphasis on native language teachers and provide timely guidance to their action research projects as they evolve.

·         Collaborate as part of our M.Ed. Team with Co-Directors (instructors) and Graduate Writing Specialist periodically to design, enhance and improve teaching and research practices and integrate cultural protocols, content and community concerns.

Teaching assignments

·         Co-instruct Applied Indigenous Knowledge course series in Integrative Indigenous Education (IIE) M.Ed. program including summer sessions.

·         Support Indigenous Praxis course by guiding local CSKT content.

·         Support candidates who are currently Native Language Teachers in their investigations.

·         Support circle monthly through the academic year and up to two times a week each summer supporting the cultural protocols of the M.Ed. program overall.

Qualifications

·         The successful candidate will possess a master's or doctorate, in a related field such as: Indigenous Education, Tribal History, Native Language Education, Native American Studies, or other related fields. Special preference will be applied to the candidate who has emphasized their studies on issues related to the Confederated Salish, Pend d'Oreille, and Kootenai Tribes, and tribes of Montana.

·         Experience teaching a Tribal language to adults or children.

·         Ability to integrate culture and language into instruction for American Indian educators.

·         Must possess an understanding of culturally-sustaining and/or revitalizing educational strategies, communication, and critical-thinking skills.

·         Excellent oral and written communication.

·         Ability to multi-task and independently organize and prioritize project activities.

·         Experience using Microsoft Suites (Word, Excel, PPT, Access), the Google Suite, and various technologies to support instruction in the classroom, preferred experience working within Learning Management Systems (LMS).

·         Work with students, faculty, and support service staff in diverse settings.

·         Ability to work flexible hours.

·         The successful candidate is energetic, self-directed, and an effective team member with professional work habits.

·         Cultural knowledge of CSKT required.

Preferred Qualifications:

·         Master’s Degree, with special preference given to candidates with degrees in any of the following fields:

o   Education

o   Native Language Education

o   Integrative Indigenous Education

·         Preference will be given to candidates who have placed an in emphasized their studies on CSKT languages, histories and cultures.

·         Demonstrated experience and skill in teaching at undergraduate and/or graduate level is preferred.
