Are you a champion for cultural preservation and linguistic heritage? Tohono O’odham Community College is seeking a dedicated Language Specialist to join the President’s Office within the O'odham Ñi’oki Ki: (O’odham Language Center). This is a unique opportunity to play a vital role in the revitalization, documentation, and promotion of the O’odham language. This is a full-time, exempt position.

Hiring Salary Range: $42,956 -  $46,790

What You Will Do:

As a Language Specialist, you will be at the forefront of language maintenance efforts, working closely with the community and various organizations. Your core responsibilities will include:

  • Collect, analyze, translate, and document various forms of O’odham language data and materials.
  • Collaborate with the Tohono O’odham Nation, related tribes, and community programs to establish effective language projects and activities.
  • Identify and maintain a network of persons who provide historical, linguistic, and cultural information.
  • Assist in creating and implementing Language Center projects, presentations, and instructional activities.
  • Lead workshops and trainings to support the language revitalization process.
  • Support the T-So:son (Our Core Values), including T-Wohocudadag (Our Beliefs), T-Apedag (Our Well-Being), T-Pi:k Elida (Our Deepest Respect), and I-We:mta (Working Together).

What You Will Bring:

We are looking for a professional who combines technical archival skills with a deep respect for O’odham traditions:

  • A profound understanding of the customs, traditions, and protocols of the Tohono O’odham.
  • Knowledge of professional ethics regarding cultural information gathering and archival methods.
  • The ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with Community Elders, tribal officials, and the public.
  • Proficiency in using computers, audio/video equipment, and educational aids to document and present language data.
  • Strong verbal and written skills to convey the significance of O’odham language and culture.

Required Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Demonstrated ability to read, write, speak, and understand O’odham.
  • A valid state Driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
  • Must successfully pass a criminal background check and possess (or have the ability to obtain) a fingerprint clearance card.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Tohono O’odham Nation O’odham Language Teacher Certification.
  • The ability to understand and speak Spanish in addition to O’odham.
  • Deep knowledge of the contemporary issues and history facing Native people.
