Join the Tohono O'odham Community College team as an Assistant Cook

TOCC is looking for a full-time Assistant Cook for the Food Program. This is a non-exempt position with an hourly wage range of $17 to $19 an hour.

What you will do

You will assist the Lead Cook in providing high-quality, nutritious meals in a clean and safe environment. Your main duties will include:

  • Assisting with preparing and cooking menu items.
  • Performing cleaning duties like washing dishes, wiping counters, and cleaning kitchen areas.
  • Receiving and storing food items according to safety and sanitation guidelines.
  • Monitoring food quality and temperature during the cooking process.
  • Plating and serving meals to meet presentation standards.
  • Working with the Lead Cook to ensure all kitchen equipment is in safe, working condition.
  • Ensuring the kitchen is properly stocked with necessary items.
  • Following all sanitation procedures.

What you will bring:

  • You should be able to communicate effectively with diverse groups, including students, faculty, and staff. You must also be able to actively listen, seek clarification, and manage difficult customer conversations with professionalism.
  • You must demonstrate strong attention to detail and follow through on all commitments.
  • This role requires you to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • You should be able to apply customer service principles by responding promptly to needs and asking for feedback.
  • You should be proficient in using computers and software applications.
  • You must have knowledge of safe work and good dietary practices.

 

Required Qualifications:

  • A high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Proficiency in preparing large quantities of food.
  • A valid state driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
  • The ability to pass a criminal background check.
  • Must possess or be able to obtain a Food Handlers Card.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Training and experience in the food industry.
  • The ability to speak and understand O'odham and/or Spanish.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the history and contemporary issues facing Native people.

     

Work Environment & Schedule:

The work schedule varies depending on location: Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.. May require evening, weekend, and occasional overtime shifts.

This position requires the ability to perform medium work, which involves lifting up to 50 pounds occasionally, and frequent or constant movement of objects weighing up to 30 and 10 pounds, respectively. The role involves frequent physical activities such as kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing for sustained periods, pushing, and grasping. You must also have visual acuity to determine the accuracy and neatness of your work. The work environment may also be subject to noise.
