PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Instructor of Arts and Humanities courses, which promotes and enhances the college's commitment to excellence in instruction and which supports the current needs of the students and faculty; advising students; maintaining office hours; assisting with registration; serving on college committees; developing curriculum; maintaining professional competence; and participating in professional development activities. In addition, tutors teach students' reading and writing skills, teach speech and communication, collaborate with faculty on assignments and students’ class-related needs to provide course-specific reading/writing tutoring, and perform other related duties as assigned.
ACCOUNTABILITY:
This person must be accessible to both students and the public during the times established as directed by the Department Chair. This person will maintain records and files as appropriate to the needs of the department and as directed by the Department Chair.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
Faculty Responsibilities:
- Teach the contracted number of credits per semester. Courses throughout the academic year include: Reading and Writing Skills, Speech and Communications, Professional Skills, and any proposed Special Topics courses in the area of expertise. May also teach Miikana, LLTC’s first-year experience course.
- Required to attend:
- Faculty in-service meetings,
- Faculty Curriculum Committee meetings, which meet bi-weekly throughout the school year,
- Tribal College graduation ceremony at the end of the school year, and
- All classes each semester; arrange for a substitute instructor in the event of your absence (all absences must be approved by the Department Chair).
- Other meetings as requested by the Department Chair.
- Required to submit:
- Course syllabi and office hours with the chair or Dean of Academics by required dates
- Final semester grades by the required semester-end dates.
- Student attendance reports in the required format at the required time.
- Any other information required by the class standards.
- Maintain office hours for students for tutorial assistance, academic advising, or assisting with student organizations such as the Student Council. These hours must be in addition to classroom hours. Faculty are required to post office hours and class schedules prior to the beginning of each semester. The specific number of office hours is determined by the faculty status, i.e., full-time, part-time, or adjunct.
- Be available for students and special duties as may be assigned during final exam weeks or registration periods.
- Meet with each student enrolled in classes through a formal appointment process once each semester.
- Abide by the Faculty Handbook.
- Participate in securing grants, including grant writing, and other support for College programs in your area of expertise.
- Participate in program or grant reporting, assessment, and/or evaluation as required.
- Deliver instruction using a variety of methods of course instruction, including traditional, online, and hybrid courses.
- Conduct orientation lectures for new classes at the beginning of each semester; assist students in the use of hardware and software applications; troubleshoot any hardware or software problems that arise during class lectures.
- Follow student services policies and procedures.
- Resolve or assist in the resolution of problems and/or complaints and initiate corrective action as appropriate.
- Participate in professional organizations as appropriate to the assignment.
- Conduct classroom research and other assessment/evaluation activities.
- Mentor and advise students.
- Serve and contribute to at least two college committees.
- Participate in college-wide retention and quality initiatives, such as peer course reviews and an early-alert system for students struggling academically.
- Participate in assessment and program review
- Perform other related duties as required or assigned.
Reading Writing Coach Responsibilities:
- Tutor writing to students in all college programs.
- Develop workshops in collaboration with the needs identified by faculty and LC staff.

- Publicize the workshops. Develop the instructional materials.
- Evaluate the effectiveness of workshops.
- Serve as a writing coach for courses, which entails collaborating with faculty on assignments, attending classes, reading course texts, and working with students on writing assignments one-on-one or in small groups.
- Complete Tutoring Documentation Forms for each session;
- Follow up with tutees in a timely manner;
- Communicate with instructors regarding issues, concerns, and suggestions.
- Assume other responsibilities related to expertise in writing, for instance, evaluating portfolios and providing analysis of papers on an as-needed basis.
- Maintain office hours for students for tutorial assistance.
- Be available for students and special duties as may be assigned during final exam weeks or registration periods.
- Resolve or assist in the resolution of problems and/or complaints and initiate corrective action as appropriate.
- Serve on various college committees and participate in professional organizations as appropriate to assignment.
Professional Development: Instructors/tutors are expected to continue pursuing educational goals to meet the needs of College accreditation, participate in appropriate professional associations, and attend relevant workshops when possible.
Administrative Duties: Instructors/tutors are required to retrieve mail and notices daily; follow the policies of the College as outlined in the Personnel Manual, Employee Handbook, Faculty handbook, College Catalog, Student Handbook, and other publications of the College.
EXPERIENCE/ REQUIREMENTS:

- Experience working with American Indian students and/or in a Native community.
- An understanding and appreciation for the role of tribal colleges in meeting the needs of the community, Leech Lake Band, and the State.

- Proven record of helping students achieve academic success.
- Strong knowledge of research writing documentation styles, specifically APA and MLA. An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience will be considered.
- Demonstrated ability to handle complex and multiple tasks in a professional and efficient manner.
- Demonstrated proficiency working in an online environment and willingness to contribute to the development of online resources.
- An understanding of, and commitment to, fiscal responsibility in support of academic and administrative effectiveness and efficiency.
- Demonstrated commitment to serving students with diverse backgrounds, interests, goals, and abilities.
- Knowledge of current issues/trends in Academics, including recruitment and retention efforts.
- Teaching experience, preferably at an adult and post-secondary level.
- Teaching experience with diverse student populations.
- Teaching with online learning tools.
SKILLS/ABILITIES:
- Ability to implement contemporary pedagogical philosophies, methods, and techniques, including multi-media, to develop and deliver instruction in classroom and lab settings;
- Excellent writing, organizational, computer, interpersonal, and communication skills;
- Able to develop instructional activities and other necessary teaching materials;
- Ability to effectively use appropriate technology and equipment;
- Knowledge of online learning and Artificial Intelligence
- Ability to work collegially with all individuals in the Tribal College setting;
- Ability to work effectively as a team member of LLTC;
- Ability to provide outstanding quality customer service and support to the LLTC and all stakeholders.
EDUCATION/RESPONSIBILITIES:
A Master’s in a discipline area is required, and/or having a minimum of 18 graduate hours in the discipline will be considered. Experience teaching at the college or university level and be able to teach courses at all appropriate levels.
Degree examples appropriate for this position:
- A master's in English with 18 graduate credit hours in communications
- A master's in communications with 18 graduate credit hours in English or another relevant degree
- A master's in any relevant field with equivalent experience in teaching the subject matter.
