POSITION SUMMARY
Leech Lake Tribal College (LLTC) seeks a Faculty Fellow in Anishinaabe Studies and Cultural Knowledge Continuity to participate in a mentorship-based succession planning initiative grounded in Anishinaabe ways of knowing, community relationships, and culturally responsive education.
The Faculty Fellow will work closely with senior faculty, Elders, and community knowledge holders to develop instructional capacity in Anishinaabe-centered curriculum, land-based learning, tribal history, governance, and cultural continuity. This position is designed to support long-term continuity in specialized coursework and student engagement activities that are central to LLTC's mission and the preservation of Anishinaabe knowledge systems.
The Faculty Fellow will participate in guided teaching, curriculum development, student mentorship, committee work, and institutional cultural activities while receiving mentorship from an experienced faculty member and community Elder.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Instruction and Teaching
Participate in co-teaching and instructional mentorship in courses including:
Nationhood and the Gathering of Manoomin
History of Leech Lake
Introduction to Anishinaabe Studies
Knowledge Bowl
Additional Anishinaabe-centered coursework as assigned
Develop culturally grounded instructional practices that integrate Anishinaabe perspectives, values, history, and community knowledge
Assist in course preparation, assessment, grading, and student support
Participate in classroom, experiential, and land-based teaching activities
Support culturally responsive learning environments for students
Mentorship and Cultural Knowledge Continuity
Work collaboratively with senior faculty and community knowledge holders in a structured mentorship model
Learn and apply culturally appropriate instructional approaches, community protocols, and relationship-building practices
Participate in succession planning activities designed to preserve institutional and community-based knowledge
Assist in documenting instructional materials, curriculum resources, and culturally grounded teaching practices for long-term program continuity
Student Engagement and Institutional Participation
Support student leadership and engagement activities, including participation in the AIHEC Knowledge Bowl program
Provide mentorship and support to students through culturally grounded relationship-building practices
Participate in faculty meetings, committee work, professional development activities, and institutional events
Assist with cultural programming, community outreach, and student-centered events as appropriate
Curriculum and Institutional Development
Participate in curriculum review, program assessment, and continuous improvement activities
Assist with the development of culturally relevant instructional materials and academic resources
Support institutional efforts related to Indigenous education, strategic planning, and community engagement
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Master’s degree in Indigenous Studies, Education, History, Ojibwe Studies, Tribal Governance, Ojibwe Language, or related field.
Demonstrated knowledge of Anishinaabe history, culture, governance, traditions, and community values
Demonstrated commitment to Indigenous education and culturally grounded teaching practices
Experience working with tribal communities, Indigenous organizations, or Indigenous-serving educational institutions
Demonstrated interpersonal and communication skills
Ojibwe language competency or demonstrated developing proficiency in Ojibwemowin
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Teaching experience in higher education, tribal education, community education, or cultural programming
Experience with land-based education, cultural instruction, or experiential learning
Familiarity with AIHEC student engagement activities and Indigenous student leadership development
Advanced proficiency in Ojibwemowin
Knowledge of Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe history, governance, and community traditions
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT
Ability to participate in classroom, outdoor, community-based, and land-based educational activities
Occasional travel for educational, cultural, or student engagement activities may be required
Evening or weekend participation in cultural or institutional events may occasionally be necessary
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
This position is contingent upon funding and institutional need. Employment is subject to LLTC policies and procedures.
