General Summary:

The First-Year Experience Coordinator (FYEC) assists with the management, development, and execution of undergraduate student programs designed to increase first-year student retention. Reporting to the Director of Academic Success, the FYEC collaborates with multiple constituencies to provide a well-rounded, guided, and positive experience for all first-year students, helping students transition to and successfully navigate their first year at SKC.

 Major Duties and Responsibilities:

●       Coordinate cultural, seasonally-based experiential learning activities on campus with Culture and Language Studies (CALS), Native American Studies (NAS), Department of Academic Success, and other campus programs. These activities may include, but not limited to beading, coyote stories, drum making, art, foods, drying meat, etc. to support and perpetuate the cultures of Séliš, Ksanka, and Qlispe’ people.

●       Assist with the new Family Support Center coordination on campus and help develop family programs for new students.

●       Assist the Admissions department with the coordination of creative programming elements for new student orientation, Bison Stampede, and other new student events, including cultural activities for new students.

●       Co-teach SKC Seminar class to incoming students during F-W-S quarters.

●       Assist with monitoring and evaluating the effectiveness of new student programs and effect changes required for improvement.

●       Attend student club meetings and engage students in activity planning and giving student clubs an opportunity to provide feedback on student activities.

●       Assist with and help develop peer mentorship programs for first year students.

●       Market activities on campus through social media, text and email.

●       Collaborate with other SKC departments to support first-year students.

●       Recruit, employ, train, supervise, and evaluate student workers who assist with campus activities coordinated by FYEC.

●       Serve as a member of appropriate college committees.

●       Represent the college professionally in the community.

●       Support and help with Department of Academic Success events and other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

●       Bachelor’s degree required, or currently enrolled in a Bachelor’s program with an expected completion date within three years. 

●       More than 1 year of experience working with college students in a role involving retention or a similar role.

●       Experience assisting with the planning, development, and implementation of programs and resources for students to enhance student retention and success.

●       Experience with the cultures of Séliš, Ksanka, and/or Qlispe’ peoples.

●       Skill in the use of personal computers and related software applications.

●       Effective written and verbal communication skills and critical thinking skills.

●       Strong organizational skills and detailed oriented.

●       Ability to work a flexible work schedule including evenings and weekends as needed.

Preferred Qualifications:

●       Two or more years’ experience working in student retention or counseling role.

●       Experience with grant and/or project management.

●       Experience with visual communication.

●       Experience with leadership or supervisory roles
