Job Description

General Summary:

We are seeking a dynamic and innovative Marketing and Communication Strategist to lead our marketing initiatives at Salish Kootenai College (SKC). In this role, you will shape our marketing and communication strategy, drive engagement, and manage our content production processes to effectively communicate our institution's story. You will focus on crafting accurate, informed, and timely messaging that builds trust, visibility, and engagement, enhancing the overall perception of SKC both internally and within the community. This position is perfect for a self-motivated leader with a 'get it done' mentality who is eager to make a meaningful impact.

Key Responsibilities

Strategy Development

•Lead the development and implementation of marketing and communication strategies that align with institutional goals and objectives.

•Analyze market trends and community needs to inform strategic decisions and enhance engagement.

Content Creation and Management

•Generate and manage high-quality content across various platforms to engage audiences and enhance the institution's visibility.

•Collect and curate compelling stories that reflect the community and institutional values, ensuring cultural sensitivity and relevance.

Internal Communications Support

•Collaborate with institutional leadership to enhance internal communication efforts, ensuring timely and accurate dissemination of information across all levels.

•Assist in the development of newsletters and other communication materials that keep staff and faculty informed of key initiatives and updates.

•Strategize and implement methods to improve communication flows within the organization, fostering a culture of transparency and engagement.

Engagement Management

•Build and maintain relationships with community stakeholders to foster trust and collaboration.

•Develop strategies for effective engagement with diverse audiences to enhance the institution's reputation and reach.

Production Oversight

•Streamline production efforts by coordinating resources and executing marketing campaigns effectively.

•Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of marketing initiatives, adjusting strategies as needed based on performance metrics and community feedback.

Process Building

•Identify and implement best practices for marketing and communication processes to ensure efficiency and effectiveness in execution.

•Take ownership of problem-solving and resource management within the marketing function.

Analytics and Continuous Improvement

•Collaboratively track performance across all marketing channels (web, social, email) to support effective and adaptive decisions.

•Iterate on strategy based on data insights and community feedback to enhance overall effectiveness.

Training and Support

•Train staff, faculty, and contributors on content submission standards, platform best practices, and media consent.

•Provide guidance and oversight to ensure that all marketing and communication efforts align with the institution's branding and messaging goals.

Minimum Qualifications (required)

•Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience (4–6 years) in marketing/communications. Other degrees (e.g., Native American Studies or Tribal Governance) may be considered if substantial or adequate experience or training is directly related to marketing, advertising, institutional messaging, public relations, or similar skill sets.

•Demonstrated experience proactively sourcing stories and producing content across multimedia, web, email, and social platforms.

•Proficiency in capturing and editing photography and video, and managing multimedia workflows.

•Substantial experience working with Indigenous communities or in culturally diverse settings, with respect for local cultural protocols.

•Strong writing, editing, interpersonal, and project management skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

•Experience in higher education, community colleges, nonprofits, or tribal-serving institutions.

•Familiarity with CMS platforms, social scheduling tools, Canva, Adobe Creative Cloud (Photoshop, Premiere, Audition), or alternatives.

•Knowledge of SEO, accessibility standards, and multimedia publishing best practices.

•Knowledge of the Confederated Salish & Kootenai Tribes’ culture, history, language, or governance is desirable.

Supervisory Responsibilities

•May supervise or coordinate student workers, interns, and external vendors/contractors (photographers, videographers, designers) and include the Marketing Committee in supervisory duties.

Performance metrics (examples)

•Quantity and quality of proactively sourced stories and original multimedia.

•Timeliness of event coverage and turnaround for post-event content.

•Growth and engagement of target audiences across platforms.

•Timely, accurate materials produced for Advancement, recruitment, grants, and events.

•Organized asset library and clear documentation of permissions and workflows.

•Positive relationships with tribal and community stakeholders and adherence to cultural protocols.

•Increased campus reputation and perceived presence within the community
