The Southwest Environmental Health Sciences Center (SWEHSC) is a collaborative and interdisciplinary research center, which is actively investigating the health effects of environmental agents and serving as a resource for the community. The Community Engagement Core serves as a non-biased resource of scientific information, promotes environmental health knowledge, provides environmental health educational resources, and supports connections between SWEHSC investigators and the community. We do this through combining respect for Indigenous science, traditional ecological knowledge, “funds of knowledge,” and citizen observation/inquiry with modern scientific advances to engage Indigenous, Latinx, and rural communities to promote and design materials and programs to work toward environmental justice for these communities.
