Job Description

Position Title: Assistant Librarian

Department: Academic Affairs

Reports Directly To:  Librarian

Status: Non-Exempt – 10 months

Salary: Per Salary Scale


Summary of Duties:

  • Responsible for the Library supervision during evenings and weekends including opening/closing library.
  • Performs general circulation tasks including registering library users and checking materials in and out.
  • Assists library users in locating materials and information.
  • Sorts and shelves returned books, periodicals and other library materials.  Retrieves and shifts library materials as needed.
  • Performs clerical work such as answering the telephone and takes accurate messages, making photocopies and sending faxes.
  • Assists in basic cataloging, processing and mending library items.
  • Maintains a clean, safe and organized environment in the UTTC library and JBC computer lab.
  • Ability to answer basic computer usage questions.
  • Follows UTTC Library policies.
  • Keeps librarian informed of library issues and needs.
  • Attends meeting(s) as necessary.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Supervisory Responsibilities:



Working Conditions:

General office conditions. Working hours include evenings and weekends with appropriate breaks for number of hours worked.


Physical Demands:

  • Physical ability to stand, bend and lift up to 30 pounds.
  • Ability to move loaded book carts.
  • Must be able to go up and down stairs.
  • Must be able to sit for long periods of time.


Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Humanities/English, Native Studies, or related field required. Minimum of 2 years of continuous work related experience preferred.


Knowledge and Skills:

  • Knowledge of Native American people, history and culture desirable.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite applications and Internet searching to assist library users.
  • Operate basic office equipment; copier, fax machine, digital phone system.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing
  • Ability and proven ability to report to work on a regular and punctual basis
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision.
