The Sitka Tribe of Alaska (STA) is seeking a VISTA Marine Ecosystem Outreach and Research Coordinator to help ensure that communities can maintain an economically productive ecosystem through minimizing exposure to biotoxins from harmful algal blooms, anticipating the effects of ocean acidification, and reducing exposure to harmful marine contaminants. The member will collaborate with Tribal partner communities and marine ecosystem experts to promote and improve community understanding of safe subsistence harvesting practices and Sitka Tribe of Alaska’s (STA) shellfish biotoxin, fishery management, heavy metal contamination, and marine chemistry research programs. The VISTA member will coordinate youth interns and develop educational curricula about ongoing STA research to be used in classrooms, community meetings, and events. They will help build a research database of pertinent questions concerning trends in shellfish biotoxin levels and other environmental threats over time. They will also help develop lab protocols, methods, and analyses of water and shellfish samples. Education curricula and delivery strategies will inform communities of the latest data and trends and promote informed economic use and maintenance of shellfish ecosystems.
