General Summary:
This is a full-time position implementing SKC Extension led education and research projects. Work activities include managing the SKC gardens, greenhouse, and assisting in implementing family and teaching gardens and the growing of native plants. Implements field research projects investigating the control and management of invasive plants and activities to restore plant communities to native grasses and forbs, and other suitable plant species. Research and non-traditional teaching on Healthy and Sustainable Diets human health topics and environmental issues, Gardens for Life training and teaching gardens, and address emerging issues important to the Salish, Kootenai, and Pend d’ Oreille Tribes like food sovereignty, human health, and grassland health of the reservation through outreach and research.
Supervision of employees, volunteers, and students. Native plant growing projects with students and community members, and incorporating SKC Extension produced native plants into restoration research and student projects. Works with tribal, federal, state, and collaborating educational institutions, entities, SKC faculty, staff, and students, and the general public in carrying out non-traditional educational activities in gardening and native plants. Implements educational sessions and projects with area schools, community members, tribal programs, and conducts investigations and implements projects in ecological restoration.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
Manage SKC gardens and greenhouse, assist off campus training gardens, school and family gardens, coordinate native plant projects, and Healthy and Sustainable Diets research.
Plan and implement invasive plant outreach, implement invasive plant control projects, research, ecological restorations, and native plant projects. Monitor past projects, and assist with community education and schools with native plants projects.
Assists Extension Director with development and implementation of SKC Extension administrative and management processes, annual plans, budgets, personnel management, writing reports and grants, implementing and managing grants.
Other duties and responsibilities:
Coordinate and oversee Extension native plant projects
Design, coordinate, conduct, and oversee Extension invasive plant and native plant restoration research
Train SKC students in research design, field methods, and statistical analysis
Create and maintain records and reports of activities and projects
Maintain photographic records of activities
Prepare activity and project schedules, conduct project and educational sessions, and conduct evaluations with employees and participants
Maintain communications with Extension Director, project partners, employees, and students
Conduct SKC student community service activities, participate in SKC in-service, provide direction and mentoring to SKC community service students and interns
Supervise employees, greenhouse and teaching garden workers, student interns, volunteers, and contractors of SKC.
Qualifications:
Master’s Degree in Environmental Science, Agriculture, Life Science, Horticulture, Botany, Forestry, or related field.
Five years of research and outreach teaching experience conducting vegetation transects, invasive species management and control, and food utilization, science, and teaching and research.
Must be knowledgeable about growing vegetables and native plants.
At least 2 years management or supervisory experience.
Demonstrated experience and success in grant writing
Coordinator must possess a valid Montana driver’s license, be able to drive trucks with trailers and boats, operate tractors, bobcats, garden tillers, and hand tools.
Must have the ability to work on uneven terrain, lifting up to 45 pounds, and in all types of weather conditions.
