Position Summary:

 

This is a full-time, fiscal year, instructor position for the College of Law’s Moscow location. This position’s teaching component may include first-year courses; core upper-level doctrinal courses; or Native American Law. This role will also contribute to the law school community through mentorship and advising activities.

 

Unit/Department Summary: Founded in 1889, the University of Idaho is the state’s land grant university and is a comprehensive research institution with its main campus in Moscow. With a first year entering class of approximately 130 students, equally split between the two campuses, the University of Idaho College of Law is ranked as one of the “Best Value Law Schools” by Pre-Law Magazine. We emphasize quality over quantity, have an average enrollment of 350 students and operate both in Boise and Moscow. Administrative Summary: The Director of the UI College of Law’s Native American Law Program is a fulltime, fiscal year position. The Native American Law Program is dedicated to the development of Native American law & policy through innovative and collaborative legal training and advocacy. A major component of the Program is the recruitment and retention of students interested in the practice of Native American law. Specialized programs and expertise are required to adequately support these students, which are often difficult to identify and experience some of the highest attrition rates in legal education. A primary role for the NAL Program Director is to develop the programming necessary to ensure a healthy and productive student population for the NAL Program. This position will work with the College’s Development Officer to raise funds to support the NAL Program; Admissions Director to recruit students to the NAL Program; Marketing and Communications Director to market the NAL Program; Academic Success faculty to ensure student support, retention, mentoring, and academic success; Career Development and Externship Directors on student career services and post-graduate career opportunities; and Vandal Bar Success faculty and the students directly on bar-exam success strategies. The administrative duties of the Program Director will be compensated by a flat rate stipend of $5,000.00.

 

Contingency Description: This administrative appointment or the administrative portion of the faculty appointment is temporary. Employee acknowledges and agrees that in the event there is no longer a need for the administrative assignment, as determined by University in its sole discretion, University may change this Agreement and remove the administrative salary and/or course release during the contract year and employee may return to their faculty appointment, upon 60 days written notice.

Minimum Education/Degree Required:

 

Listed degree qualification is required at time of application.

 

Required Qualifications:

 

• A J.D. from an accredited school or the equivalent;

• At least two years of post-J.D. practice, clerking, or teaching experience

• Teaching experience, or related experience

• Demonstrated experience working in the field of Native American law

• Demonstrated experience of successfully working in tribal communities and/or with individual tribal members.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

 

• Demonstrated experience successfully working with law students that are members of federally recognized tribes;

• Prior experience organizing and implementing academic program goals;

• A demonstrated vision for the development of a Native American Law Program in a law school setting.
