POSITION SUMMARY
Responsible for individual and group substance abuse counseling, substance abuse assessments, case management, and service referrals for identified students. Works in collaboration with other departments to promote the wellbeing of students.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES, FUNCTIONS, & RESPONSIBILITIES
Attends required program meetings, FCS's, and others, including weekly individual and group sessions.
Utilizes electronic record keeping system and input clinical records for substance abuse counseling services in a timely manner.
Completes assessments and progress notes in accordance with timelines set in department policies and procedures.
Submits a minimum of 15 billable contact hours per week.
Provides counseling to students, individuals, and/or groups regarding substance abuse issues.
Coordinates with primary mental health counselor to develop treatment plans for students.
Determines the effectiveness and progress of substance abuse treatments using standardized assessment tools and makes recommendations if modification of services or an outside referral is necessary.
Guides students in the development of skills and strategies to include decision making, refusal skills, life skills, and healthy coping skills.
Maintains confidential case files as required by the HIPAA Privacy Act.
Ensures release of information forms are obtained and completed, if necessary.
Provides transition and support services for students who have recently completed residential treatment.
Facilitates substance abuse prevention education and outreach in individual, group and classroom settings
Coordinates with PASS program staff for identified students.
Assists the department with regularly scheduled outreach activities (Career Fair, etc.).
Must be able to work flexible weekend and evening hours to address community needs.
Review and respond to e‐mails, voicemails, and other forms of communication within one business day.
May participate in special programs and/or events.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES
Knowledge of principles, methods, assessments, standards, procedures of substance abuse counseling.
Ability to apply substance abuse counseling methods and techniques for adolescents (age 12 and older).
Knowledge of case management, community resources, legal and ethical issues related to student’s rights and parent advocacy. 
Ability to establish positive working relationships with students, staff, parents, and other professionals. 
Ability to plan and organize, meet schedules and deadlines, for each job component. 
Ability to maintain files and records and be in compliance with the HIPAA Privacy Act.
Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing with students, family, staff, and community agencies.
Flexibility, organization, decision-making and problem-solving skills.
Interpersonal skills with work with diverse populations both in person and on the telephone.  
Ability to collaborate with school administration, faculty, staff, students, parents, and community providers to achieve optimum health outcomes for the SFIS School Community.
Ability to establish and maintain respectful working relationships with students, parents, and staff
Ability to prepare accurate, complete, and legible reports presenting detailed and accurate information.
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Qualifications
New Mexico LADAC/LSAA counseling license
Must maintain required annual Continuing Education Units (CEUs) and other requirements necessary to maintain professional licensure.
One (1) year of experience in counseling, preferably with Native American students.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience working with Native American students and Native American or Tribal entities, preferred.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS
Must possess a valid NM driver’s license and must complete and successfully pass a background investigation, including FBI fingerprint check.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
While performing the duties of this position; sitting, standing, lifting, carrying (up to 30 pounds), reaching, squatting, kneeling, and moving light furniture may be required. Must be able to work within various degrees of noise, temperature, and air quality. Interruptions of work are routine. Flexibility and patience are required. Must be self-motivated and able to complete job assignments without direct supervision. Have manual and finger dexterity. Occasionally required to reach above shoulder level, repetitive hand, and arm motions; must be able to see, read, and record small numbers.
WORK ENVIRONMENT, SAFETY, & EQUIPMENT
Work is generally performed in an office setting. Frequent use of communication equipment and computers. Evening, holiday, and weekend work may be required. Must be able to work within various degrees of noise, temperature, and air quality. Interruptions of work are routine. Flexibility and patience are required. Must be self-motivated and able to complete job assignments without direct supervision. May require traveling to various communities to meet with students, parents, guardians, Tribal social services, and other service providers.
Safety and Health Requirements:
Proper posture is required to eliminate acute and chronic low back pain.
Complete all required safety and health training.
Knowledge of universal hygiene precautions and knowledge of safe school precautions.
The employee must adhere to SFIS safety protocols and crisis plans.
Equipment/Material Handled:
Must know how to properly operate, or be willing to learn to operate, all multi-media equipment, software, and current technology.
CONDITIONS
Any employee may be required to stay at or return to work during incidents and/or emergencies to perform duties specific to this classification or to perform other duties as requested in an assigned response position. This may require working a non-traditional work schedule or working outside normal assigned duties during the incident and/or emergency.
