Summary of Responsibilities: The incumbent will lead and teach on cultural concerns and issues facing Indigenous Peoples as they relate to museums, collections, exhibitions, and curatorial practices, with particular attention to repatriation and Native self-representation. The role will be carried out in alignment with the mission, vision, and core values of the Institute of American Indian Arts (IAIA), which seeks to foster an inclusive and respectful work environment that advances Indigenous perspectives and voices. 
 
Essential Position Functions: 
· Provide college-level instruction in Museum Studies courses across introductory, intermediate, and advanced levels, within the context of a unique curriculum which requires adherence to the distinctive art and object concerns of Indigenous communities
· Maintain active professional practices as a faculty member, contributing to both personal scholarship and institutional excellence 
· Participate in educational and professional activities within the Institute and wider Native American communities to provide public education and public scholarship on the unique concerns of Indigenous Peoples vis-à-vis museums and collections
· Advise students on degree program pathways and career opportunities, supporting academic and professional development
· Hold the designated number of office hours per week
· Take part in on-going committee work assignments and participate in assigned committee work and meetings
· Contribute to curriculum development that integrates Indigenous perspectives and aligns with academic accreditation standards 
· Maintain adequate facilities for the program and the delivery of required courses
· Collaborate with related departments to enhance interdisciplinary learning and shared initiatives 
· Foster partnerships with cultural institutions and Indigenous organizations to enrich educational experiences and strengthen community ties
· Other duties as assigned
Required Education and Experience: Requires an MA/MFA in Museum Studies, Cultural Anthropology, Native American Art History, American Indian Studies or a related field, along with relevant professional experience and at least two years of teaching experience at a college level. Experience working with American Indian and Alaska Native communities is required.
 
Preferred Education and Experience: A Ph.D. in Museum Studies, Cultural Anthropology, Native American Art History, American Indian Studies or equivalent degree and experience. A proven track record of exhibitions and publications in contemporary museological practices. Experience working with Indigenous communities, particularly  American Indian and Alaska Native artists and cultures. 
 
Required Competencies (Skills/Knowledge and Abilities):
· Knowledge of Native American arts and culture
· Knowledge of museum professional conduct and ethics
· Knowledge of museum best practices, preferably with a focus in Indigenous museum practices
· Knowledge of museum administration, education, curation, repatriation, and collections management 
· Demonstrated background and ability to motivate Native American students in developing/enhancing their skills, knowledge, and understanding of Museum Studies precepts.
· Ability to teach undergraduate level courses, both in-person and online (synchronous and asynchronous) 
· Excellent communication skills
· Exceptional written, verbal, analytical and organizational skills
· Knowledge and ability to work in Windows Suite, Adobe Creative Suite, and other applicable software/programs
· Ability to work collaboratively within, and external to, the department and department projects
· Flexibility and adaptability to changing work environments and priorities 
· Ability to work with minimum supervision: to begin projects independently and to bring projects to conclusion in a timely manner
· Faculty in a lead role may be assigned additional and related leadership duties 
 
Working Conditions:
· Duties require extended periods of standing, walking, sitting, and talking 
· Duties require occasional periods of climbing or balancing, pulling/pushing items, lifting/carrying items, reaching, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling
· Occasional travel for meetings, conferences, and other events using personal or company vehicle 
· Occasional support of student gallery, including, but not limited to support with installations (which may include increased physical requirements), opening receptions, and programming
· May be instructed to perform other instructions and duties as needed
