The UCSD Mathematics Department is a dynamic unit with 77 faculty members and approximately 50+ additional non-FTEs in various instructional and research titles. These academics work on a broad range of research funded by diverse federal, state, and private agencies. The department comprises dedicated career staff, 180 Master's and Ph.D. students, and over 2,400 undergraduate students. Together, they generate high-caliber research in various fields and provide an outstanding graduate program that attracts top-ranked students, contributing to the department’s academic reputation.
The department maintains a large undergraduate program that prepares over 2,400 pure and applied mathematics majors, as well as students from 57 other majors across the campus. This program provides a strong fundamental background in mathematics needed to succeed in various career options. The faculty are engaged in a vigorous research program with an average of 72 active awards in many interdisciplinary areas, totaling approximately $20 million per year. The instructional program enrolls approximately 30,000 graduate and undergraduate students annually.
As the fundamental language of science, mathematics is an essential intellectual tool required by a trained workforce to create the technological advances of the future. The department is home to The Center for Computational Mathematics (CCoM), which consists of a broad and diverse group of faculty, researchers, and students who share a common interest in the mathematical aspects of computation. The Math Department hosts the Director and staff of the CSU/UC Mathematics Diagnostic Testing Project (MDTP), an intersegmentalstatewide education project in California, and the Director and staff of the Math Testing and Placement (MTP) Office.
The Math Testing and Placement (MTP) Office provides early outreach to onboard incoming and oversees all aspects of math placement and testing for all incoming first-year students (from high school and transfer students). The MTP Office collaborates with several departments on campus and maintains a strong partnership with Admissions evaluates math placement admissions data which includes qualifying AP Calculus and IB scores and college calculus equivalent credit to identify students who need to take the Math Placement Exam (MPE) and advise students in real-time of their ability to enroll in math at UC San Diego. MTP supports enrollment in preparatory and introductory lower division math courses throughout the year. In coordination with the Mathematics Diagnostic Testing Project (MDTP), provides and maintains an online platform to administer the MPE. The MTP Office monitors, evaluates, and makes decisions regarding enrollment requests while onboarding over 8,500 students and facilitates MPE testing for approximately 3,000 students throughout the year.
Applies skills as a recruitment and / or admissions professional. Provides substantive information on student programs for the organization or in college / school / department. Performs recruitment activities. Evaluates and makes determinations regarding applications for admission using established guidelines.
• Occasional evenings and weekends may be required.
QUALIFICATIONS
• Math background in undergraduate or graduate degree.
• Understanding of various levels of math classes and their prerequisites and restrictions.
• Experience in computer programming.
• Experience in creating and maintaining large databases and creating predictive coding using multiple measures to categorize student data.
• Experience work in Google environments, using Google applications with expertise in Sheets and/or Microsoft Excel.
• Knowledge and experience working with a diverse student population.
• Working knowledge of admissions requirements for campus / school / college.
• Ability to maintain cooperative relationships with schools, universities, community organizations and other institutions.
• Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
• Ability to interpret office policy to faculty, staff, students, parents, teachers, students, administrators, and other universities.
• Ability to speak to and give instructions to large and small groups.
• Skill in maintaining accurate records and files.
• Ability to conceive of new programs and carry-through to inception.
• Excellent interpersonal skills, including tact, diplomacy, and flexibility
• Skill to develop and write procedures and training material.
• Ability to work independently, use own judgment, set priorities, and exercise initiative of job responsibilities.
• Skill at organizing and setting priorities to meet deadlines.
• Ability to interact with a wide variety of constituents
• Skill in copyediting, proofreading, and writing using correct punctuation, grammar, and style. Ability to write precisely and clearly and communicate on behalf of the department in a manner that is appropriate to its goals and aims.
