General Summary:
The Career Advisor of the TRIO Student Support Services Program {SSS) is primarily responsible for the overall coordination, implementation, continuous review, and analysis of career services for SSS participants. The Career Advisor works closely with the Director of the SSS Program and other SSS staff to develop strategies to increase student engagement in career pathways, readiness, and career goals. The Career Advisor must also be familiar with the problems encountered by students in rural areas, as well as the socioeconomic challenges, transportation issues, and diversity-related needs of Native American people.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Overall coordination of the Career Services of the TRIO Student Support Services Program.
- Maintain cooperative relationships with faculty and college staff. Maintain relationships with business, labor, tribal agencies, and community organizations in regard to jobs and internships.
- Provide career counseling/exploration for SSS participants.
- Provide workshops on job readiness, resume building, interviewing tips, etc.
- Collaborate regularly with the SKC Career Department.
- Establish and maintain accurate, timely and complete recordkeeping processes, ensuring that all grant reporting requirements and restrictions are observed.
- Communicate the career objectives and outcomes of the program to grant staff, college administrators, and other college personnel.
- Attend meetings required by funding sources, which may require out-of-state travel.
- Attend conferences relevant to the program and keep current with trends and developments in the fields of learning outcomes, assessment, and basic skills education.
- Advise, counsel, and advocate with/for students daily.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Must have a Bachelor Degree from an accredited college or university in education, counseling, career/vocational, or a related field.
- Must have at least two years’ experience working with Student Support Services/TRIO, postsecondary educational student services, or other similar educational programs for adults in career services or career planning.
- Must have knowledge of post-secondary institutions, financial aid and student advising skills.
- Must have experience with the Montana Career Information system (MCIS), preferred.
- Must have excellent verbal and written communications skills.
- Proven competencies with computers, preferably with Networks and Teleconferencing, Internet, E-mail, and Microsoft Office expertise.
- Must be familiar with issues encountered by students in rural areas and the socioeconomic challenges, employment barriers, and diversity-related needs of Native Americans.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Two years’ experience of student advising, career and academic counseling for general and/or special student populations.
- Understanding of, sensitivity to and respect for the diverse, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic background of the Salish Kootenai colleges' students, faculty, staff, and community.
