Job Description

If you are pursuing an IT-related bachelor's degree program or you are planning to pursue an IT-related master's degree program, and you would like a career as a Diplomatic Technology Officer, this U.S. Department of State fellowship program may be the perfect opportunity for you!

The FAIT Fellowship provides two years of academic funding an IT-related degree, internships, professional development and mentorship.When you complete the fellowship and the Foreign Service entry requirements, you will enter the Foreign Service as a Diplomatic Technology Officer.

In this fellowship, you would be attending your university in the approved degree program full-time in the spring and fall semesters for the duration of the two-year program. In the two summers, you will be in an internship with stipend support - the first summer in Washington, D.C. at the U.S. Department of State; the second summer overseas at a U.S. embassy or consulate. 

At the end of your overseas internship, you will return Stateside, and join the Foreign Service as a Diplomatic Technology Officer. You will receive professional development training by the U.S. Department of State and you will launch your career as you leave for your first post at a U.S. embassy or consulate overseas! 

What do you receive as a FAIT Fellow?

  • Up to $43,500 annually (for two years) in academic funding for tuition, room and board, books, mandatory fees and some travel expense (see eligibility requirements).
  • Stipends, housing and travel allowances for the two summer internships: A domestic internship in Washington, D.C., at the U.S. Department of State and an overseas internship at a U.S. Embassy or Consulate.
  • Personalized mentoring and professional development opportunities throughout the program.

The application for the 2025 cohort is oen September 16, 2024 through January 21, 2025.  

Are you eligible to apply?

To be eligible to apply for the 2025 cohort, you must meet all the criteria below:

  • Be a U.S. citizen.
  • Attend or planning to attend a U.S.-based accredited institution.
  • Community college students in an associate degree program must be seeking admission to enter a full-time, IT-related bachelor’s degree program (or accelerated bachelor’s/master’s degree program) in fall 2025, and on a timeline to graduate in spring 2027.
  • Four-year college/university students must be enrolled full-time in an IT-related bachelor’s degree program (or accelerated bachelor’s/master’s degree program), and on a timeline to graduate in spring 2027.
  • For the graduate fellowship, individuals must be seeking admission to full-time IT-related master’s degree starting in fall 2025 and on a timeline to graduate in spring 2027.
  • Hold a minimum 3.2 GPA on a 4.0 scale at the time of the application and maintain this GPA throughout the program.
