Description

SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES

The Theater Technician will work with the Performing Arts Department Chair and take the lead in managing all technical aspects of IAIA’s black box theater. The incumbent is responsible for sound and lighting design as well as working with students and student workers as both a mentor and supervisory capacity. The incumbent will perform the duties, responsibilities and requirements of the position outlined in the Essential Functions. The Theatre Technician supports IAIA’s mission, vision and core values that include familiarity with Indigenous ways of understanding. 

ESSENTIAL POSITION FUNCTIONS

· Mounting community and departmental theatre productions

· Providing oversight of all scenic, lighting, sound, paint, properties

· Video elements; creating technical drawings

· Supervise student workers and, as needed, internships and apprenticeships

· Teach one (1) course per year as part of the contractual work

· Supervise set design; work with the department chair to make production purchases

· Supervise technical rehearsals

· Maintain technical inventory and equipment

· Maintain oversight of performance spaces

· Lead in the design and operation of the latest technology equipment

· Operate LED lighting, moving lights and dimmers

· Produce lighting plots specifying the placement and configuration of all instruments used in theatre production

· Capacity to perform the necessary electrical work to support theatrical designs

· Oversee ongoing maintenance of the sound systems and setting the sound cues

· Oversee needed special electrical/lighting/projection effects 

· Oversee the occasional construction, placement, and rigging of stage scenery

· Upkeep the general maintenance of equipment and storage areas

Requirements

 REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION

  • Bachelor’s degree in Technical Theatre, Film Production, or related field with at least five years of experience working on sound and lighting equipment, or the equivalent of relevant experience. 

REQUIRED SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES

  • Ability to  prioritize work and manage multiple tasks
  • Strong interpersonal skills in interacting with diverse student community and to the public
  • Excellent organizational skills and demonstrated ability to work in a fast-paced  environment
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills 
  • Ability to  set and meet deadlines 
  • Able to adhere to appropriate standards of conduct and ethics, including  confidentiality, integrity, and honesty
  • Demonstrated ability to present, at all times a pleasant, courteous, and professional demeanor  and presence
  • Ability to work collaboratively with department faculty and students independently (or as assigned), and to bring projects (or assignments) to conclusion on a timely basis

WORKING CONDITIONS

 Ability to set up and operate all tools used for camera, sound and lighting; may include heavy lifting, climbing, and crawling

May be asked by the Department Chair to perform other duties
