Job Summary:

 The overall position will provide instructional duties for the Lakota Studies Department in support of the Faculty & Staff, Students, SGU campus-wide departments & facilities, general public, and outside agencies & other educational institutions including Tribal College & Universities.

 Duties & Responsibilities:

  1. Key Criteria: knowledge of a computer system and computer programs for on line instruction and communication with students, faculty, and staff.
  2. Online teaching/instruction: ability to create a classroom per SGU’s recommendations, upload assignments, quizzes, tests/examinations, and course information for students. Meet students in an online virtual classroom setting.
  3. Respect and adhere to other departmental/college/ internet service provider’s acceptable use policies.
  4. Respect copyright and intellectual-property rights of the University.
  5. Respect University property.
  6. Involvement and assistance in the curriculum design for Lakota Studies.
  7. Curriculum development: Lakota History/Spirituality with the intent of the Lakota Studies program to develop and update curricula under authorized activity.
  8. Developing and improving academic programs for the Lakota Studies Department.
  9. Improve curriculum for existing academic programs to stabilize and/or increase student enrollment.
  10. Classroom instruction, preparation, and supervision.
  11. Classroom design, preparation, instruction, supervision, and other associated responsibilities.
  12. Assessment of student performance, including the preparation, administration, grading, and evaluation of tests, papers, and examinations and the reporting of grades.
  13. Conferences with, and academic advisement of, students outside of their registration needs.
  14. Experiments in teaching methods and teaching-oriented research.
  15. Coordination, supervision, and evaluation of student research.
  16. Coordination and supervision of student activities directly related to the academic program such as supervising a Lakota club, debate team, or intramural athletic team.
  17. Writing letters of recommendation for students.
  18. Assist adjunct faculty, part-time instructors, and Department Chairperson in planning, providing instructional materials, textbooks, and curriculum, including administrative tasks.
  19. Input into the selection and procurement of textbooks, and other materials for classroom or laboratory use.
  20. Participation in University-sponsored activities such as recruiting students and graduation activities.
  21. Advisement and counseling of students during registration periods.
  22. Proficiency in oral and written communication (Lakota language/English)
  23. Faculty need to abide by all established policies and procedures of Sinte Gleska University.
  24. Other duties as assigned in the performance of his/her responsibilities and as mutually agreed upon to the benefit of Sinte Gleska University. 

Minimum Qualifications & Experience:

1.      Master’s degree preferred with demonstrated knowledge in Lakota Studies; or other Master degrees with/including known expertise in Lakota Studies will be considered.

2.      Bachelor’s degree in Lakota or American Indian Studies required with demonstrated knowledge in Lakota Studies; other Bachelor degrees with known expertise in Lakota Studies will be considered.

3.      Established teaching experience in higher education; or other teaching experience will be considered.

4.      Established ability to teach Lakota language, culture, history, etc. (any Lakota Studies courses) from the Lakota Studies curriculum.

5.      Knowledge of tribal law, history, culture, philosophy, and language.

6.      Ability to conduct research, or assessment or evaluation in Lakota Studies.

7.      Technology skills required.

8.      Lakota speaking and/or understanding, beneficial.

9.      Must take and pass pre-employment alcohol / drug test and background check.

10.   Must have the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, faculty, and the general public.

11.   Must possess excellent organizational skills and performs duties in a timely manner with minimum supervision.

12.   A strong work ethic.

13.   A valid South Dakota driver’s license.

14.   Must have reliable transportation.
