South Dakota State University is the state’s largest, most comprehensive higher-education institution. As South Dakota’s Morrill Act land-grant university, SDSU had a fall 2022 enrollment of 11,331, with students coming from 47 states and 73 countries. Students can choose from 86 majors, 38 specializations, 102 minors, 39 master’s degree programs, 16 Ph.D. programs and two professional doctorates. The university also offers courses at various off-campus sites as well as undergraduate and graduate programs online through the Office of Continuing and Distance Education. The University is governed by the South Dakota Board of Regents, which also has oversight of South Dakota’s five additional universities within a unified system.

From its roots as a land-grant university, committed to the creation of knowledge and educating all, established in Brookings, South Dakota in 1881, South Dakota State University today is a vibrant institution. SDSU is South Dakota’s first High Research Activity institution as classified by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. It competes in Division I athletics and is a member of the Big 12 conference for wrestling, the Missouri Valley Football Conference, and the Summit League for all other sports.

The College of Education and Human Sciences (https://www.sdstate.edu/education-human-sciences) serves 3,075 students with a variety of undergraduate and graduate programs. The college consists of the School of Education, Counseling and Human Development and School of Health and Consumer Sciences. The two schools offer 20 major options, 15 minor paths and approximately 23 graduate degree options and seven certificate programs. The college also serves students within BHSU-Rapid City. This center is a satellite facility in the beautiful Black Hills region of South Dakota that specializes in bringing graduate-level education and career-enhancement opportunities to nontraditional students and educational professionals. The mission of the college is to enhance human potential by centering on the improvement of human life and community through the promotion of mental, physical and financial health.

Reporting to the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, the dean is the college’s chief academic and executive officer. The Dean of the College of Education and Human Sciences will be a visionary person of proven leadership ability, high integrity, a strong record of successful research and scholarship activity, as well as successful administrative leadership in a complex environment and a commitment to furthering the mission of a land-grant university. The dean will be an experienced, entrepreneurial, creative, and collaborative leader, with a deep appreciation of the variety of disciplines represented in the college and have a passion for providing an outstanding educational experience to all students. The successful candidate will have an earned doctorate and a distinguished record of academic performance consistent with appointment as a tenured full professor in a discipline appropriate to the college.
