Situated on Treaty Six territory, the Faculty of Education at the University of Alberta invites applications from Indigenous scholars for a tenure track position at the Assistant Professor level to begin July 1, 2022 to work in the Aboriginal Teacher Education Program (ATEP) and Indigenous Peoples Education Program.
Interested individuals are invited to apply and join a Faculty where they would have opportunities to engage in thoughtful and critical scholarship alongside undergraduate/ graduate students and internationally renowned scholars. The Indigenous scholar hired through this initiative will support the Faculty of Education's Aboriginal Teacher Education Program (ATEP) and contribute to the Indigenous Peoples Education (IPE) graduate program, currently situated in the Department of Educational Policy Studies, in the Faculty of Education. . ATEP offers community-based collaborative cohorts in partnership with post-secondary institutions across Alberta, and has recently expanded to include a 4-year online, and a 4-year on campus elementary education program. ATEP works towards developing a greater understanding of Aboriginal peoples’ histories, cultures, perspectives, educational experiences and knowledge systems in an effort to improve the educational experiences and outcomes of Aboriginal children. ATEP and IPE are recognized as two of the most long standing Indigenous higher education programs in the country, educating teachers, school administrators, policy makers, language educators, scholars, leaders and community organizers. Both programs are dedicated to the education of students for the benefit of Indigenous communities.
Applicants should have scholarship in Indigenous/Aboriginal teacher education and at least one of the following areas of teaching and research expertise:
• Indigenous community-based education
• Indigenous knowledge
• Indigenous research methodologies
• Indigenous curriculum perspectives
• Indigenous assessment perspectives and strong educational psychology understanding (e.g. child development, assessment, inclusive education)
• K-12 and adult education in relation to Aboriginal education.
The successful candidate’s responsibilities will include undergraduate and graduate teaching, supervising graduate students, developing and sustaining a personal program of research relevant to Aboriginal/Indigenous education. The successful applicant will also be expected to work closely with existing faculty and a network of Indigenous/Aboriginal knowledge holders and teachers presently engaged in academic collaboration with Indigenous/Aboriginal faculty in order to promote and deepen general and academic understanding of the significance of Indigenous/Aboriginal knowledge within the Department and the Faculty.
In addition to a doctorate, relevant teaching experience at the K-12 school and postsecondary level is desirable. Priority will be given to applicants who can demonstrate a lived Indigenous experience with excellence and Aboriginal community relevance in their program(s) of research, particularly in the area of K-12 Indigenous/Aboriginal schooling; an Indigenous/Aboriginal worldview in their contemporary lives; and the ability to counsel, supervise, teach, and support students in the expression of values, integrity, and knowledge as these relate to Indigenous peoples worldwide. Applicants must demonstrate service to either their own community or other Indigenous communities.
