This is a full-time, non-tenure track Assistant Teaching Professor position beginning August 2023 (AY 23-24). This academic year appointment is a teaching position fulfilling Applied Indigenous Studies, diversity requirement, and general studies program needs.
The Department of Applied Indigenous Studies at Northern Arizona University (NAU) invites applications for one non-tenure-track position in Applied Indigenous Studies at the Assistant Teaching Professor level beginning in August 2023. This position is teaching focused, non-tenure eligible, and is expected to be continuing with potential for promotion. At the time of hire, we seek a teacher-scholar with a Ph.D. in Native American/American Indian/Indigenous Studies or Juris Doctor with experience in Federal Indian Law, or related field; regional, temporal, and topical research specialties are open; however, the candidate is expected to complement and strengthen the department's undergraduate and graduate curriculum. Teaching responsibilities include multiple courses that contribute to the department's requirements and NAU's General Studies program, which is currently being redesigned to include a stand-alone requirement in Indigenous peoples' perspectives. Courses include introductory Applied Indigenous Studies courses (multiple topics) for non-majors and possible upper-level undergraduate or graduate level courses.

The https://nau.edu/aisconsists of 9 full-time faculty members, and we offer a BA or BS, a unique Indian Country Criminal Justice BS, 4 minor areas, and a graduate certificate in Indigenous and Tribal Nation-Building, Leadership, Management and Administration.
• Ph.D. in Indigenous/American Indian/Native American Studies, or any other field relevant to departmental specializations, OR
• Applications will also be accepted with the Juris Doctor degree and experience with Federal Indian Law.

• Completed coursework and/or experience with Indigenous pedagogy that is community-based, with a focus on Indigenous nation-building;
• Evidence of or completed coursework that focuses on Indigenous community-engaged research;
• Evidence of or completed coursework in the areas of Indigenous law (not federal Indian law), policy, and administration that are rooted in traditional knowledge and practice;
• Experience with or completed coursework in the area of sustainable Indigenous economic development, including Indigenous entrepreneurship;
• Experience with or completed coursework in Indigenous social and cultural resilience;
• Experience with or completed coursework in the areas of federal Indian law and federal Indian policy;
• Evidence of research and teaching and/or completed coursework in the areas of Indigenous nation-building and/or Indigenous self-determination (both or either can be globally focused);
• Commitment to teaching and mentoring of undergraduate and graduate students;
• Potential for refereed scholarship (evidenced through direct experience or brief written statement of related experience);
• Potential for effective teaching in both face-to-face and online teaching modalities (evidenced through direct experience or brief written statement of related experience);
• Excellent communication skills; and
• Evidence of commitment to creating and maintaining an inclusive teaching and work environment that respects diverse perspectives.

This is a Faculty (FAC) position. NAU offers an excellent benefit package including generous health, dental and vision insurance; participation in the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS) or the Optional Retirement Program (ORP); sick leave accruals and 10 holidays per year; and tuition reduction for employees and qualified family members.
