Position Summary: The University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF) Department of Alaska Native Studies and Rural Development invites applications for a tripartite Assistant Professor position in Alaska Native Studies.
• 20% Research: Develop an independent research program that engages undergraduate and graduate students. Pursue external funding to support this program. Publish results in the peer-reviewed literature. Essential
• 20% Service: Other professional duties included: serving on department, college, and university committees; and providing professional and public service to the department, college, university, and community. Essential
• 60% Course development and Instruction: The successful candidate will be expected to develop and teach courses in a manner consistent with the specific course content descriptions; develop and modify curriculum and teaching modalities; and hold office hours appropriate for the courses being taught. Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:Knowledge of and experience working with Alaska Native students, Indigenous organizations, private and public external constituencies, and government agencies. Strong interpersonal and communication skills. Ability to advocate for the University and develop new student cohorts. Ability to develop and teach online and distance-delivered courses. Ability to develop Alaska Native cultural orientation materials and activities for faculty and staff. Ability to teach in a cross-cultural context by being open, respectful, diplomatic, and sensitive to different points of view. Ability to facilitate open and respectful dialogue.
Typical Experience:Applicants for this position must have expertise in teaching distance education courses within fields related to Alaska Native/Indigenous Studies. Potential areas of expertise are Indigenous knowledge systems, Native ways of knowing, cultural studies in the humanities and social sciences, Federal Indian law and policy, Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act, nurturing community well-being, and comparative studies in the Arctic and Circumpolar regions. Experience with Alaska Native peoples, Elders, and communities. Experience successfully working in a team environment. Evidence of scholary contributions, including research, publications and/or exhibitions.
Required Education or Training:
Applicants for this position must have completed a Master's degree and have expertise in teaching distance education courses and guiding student research within fields related to Alaska Native/Indigenous Studies. This is a full-time tripartite tenure-track faculty position, starting pay is DOE, a 9-month position complete with a salary and competitive https://www.alaska.edu/jobs/benefits/. This position can be located at one of the following locations: Anchorage, Fairbanks, Juneau, Girdwood, Chugiak, Eagle River, Kenai, Soldotna, Homer, Ketchikan, Palmer, Wasilla, Seward, Sitka, Angoon.
