The Department of Cinema Studies at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor faculty position to begin in Fall 2023. We seek scholars working in critical Indigenous film and media studies, especially (but not necessarily) in the Americas. Candidates should be conversant with the decolonial critique of settler-colonial representations, and with histories of self-representation and media performances by Indigenous peoples themselves. We welcome scholars whose work crosses disciplinary borders and who are interested in relations between various Indigenous communities, peoples, and nations. Desirable areas of knowledge and competencies include: familiarity with discussions of Indigenous media archival practices; relevant language proficiencies; and awareness of digital curatorial and artistic practices. We encourage applications from scholars who work in collaboration with Indigenous communities and who are interested in forms of collaborative and collective practices within and among Indigenous societies.
This search is part of a cluster hire in Native American and Indigenous studies. The successful applicant will help build the department’s strengths in Indigenous media studies and foster interdisciplinary relationships with other programs and departments across the university. Undergraduate teaching is expected and will include both courses in the general core of the major and specialized courses in Indigenous-related subjects. On the graduate level, the candidate will work with Ph.D. students, teach MA-level seminars, and supervise MA student research.
Information on our undergraduate and graduate curricula and descriptions for both the graduate and undergraduate degrees can be found at http://tisch.nyu.edu/cinema-studies.
Candidates preferably should have a Ph.D. in hand at the time of application, with evidence of an active commitment to research as reflected in publications, as well as a demonstrated level of a potential for excellence in teaching. In addition to a letter of application, candidates should supply a CV, writing sample, and the names and emails/phone numbers of three referees via https://tisch.nyu.edu/faculty/faculty-positions.
