SUMMARY:

The STEM Faculty at Sitting Bull College (SBC) invite applications for a full-time instructor position in Genetics/Genomics available in the 2022/2023 academic year. The successful candidate will join a team of faculty dedicated to quality instruction and student guidance. Primary responsibilities are to lead courses, create innovative learning experiences, advise students, and provide services to the college. The successful candidate will serve as lead for Genomics and related research activities at the SBC Prairie Ecosystems Research Center (PERC), an NSF-TCUP-TEA CENTER funded center of research excellence.
The Environmental Science Program at SBC is home to innovative educators who are guided by interdisciplinary inquiry, educational access, applied learning and student success. The program offer associate, bachelors and master’s degrees in environmental science and values cultural and intellectual diversity, and continually strives to foster a welcoming and inclusive environment. We are interested in applicants who can strengthen equity, diversity, and inclusion within the program and college. Sitting Bull College is one of the few best Tribal Colleges in North America with multiple master’s degree programs.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Develop, prepare and teach classes in the areas of Genomics, Genetics, Bioinformatics, and General Biology as well as in other Environmental Science related areas.
  2. Promote and recruit students for the BS and MS degree programs in Environmental Science.
  3. Maintain various reports, such as attendance, grades, assessment, and other reports as required by administration.
  4. Evaluate student performance and assign appropriate grades. Participate in student assessment activities.
  5. Update and maintain curriculum and course syllabi as needed.
  6. Mentor and advice students in undergraduate and MS degree programs in Environmental Science.
  7. Maintain an advisee file for each student.
  8. Serve as lead for Genomics, Genetics, and Bioinformatics related research activities at the SBC Prairie Ecosystems Research Center (PERC).
  9. Maintain laboratory supplies and equipment for the Genomics lab.
  10. Develop appropriate laboratory modules and activities in the areas of Genomics, Genetics, and Bioinformatics to be used as training materials for student researchers, laboratory technicians, and the public.
  11. Mentor students in developing and completing undergraduate and graduate research projects, especially in the areas of Genomics and Environmental sciences.
  12. Provide friendly, helpful customer service to students, clients and visitors.
  13. Serve on assigned SBC committees, and perform other duties as assigned by supervisor.
  14. Attend all scheduled college functions and meetings as required.

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Terminal degree (earned a PhD or equivalent degree) in either Genomics, Genetics, and Bioinformatics or closely related area at time of appointment. Applicants with Ph.D. degree in Biology will be considered.
  2. A commitment to excellence in the teaching of future environmental and healthcare professionals or related field with an emphasis in Genomics, Genetics, Bioinformatics or closely related area at time of appointment.
  3. Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  4. A willingness to work with federal and tribal programs; and tribal community partners.
  5. Willingness to teach at least one evening class per week.
  6. A respectful team player.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Experience teaching in-person and in digital environments (incl. synchronous and asynchronous)
  2. Experience working in a collaborative environment and across disciplines.
  3. Bioinformatics skills are a significant plus, including analysis of whole-genome sequencing data.
  4. Post-doctoral experience and evidence of teaching and mentoring both undergraduate and graduate students.
  5. Experience working with natives and underrepresented communities on both federal and tribal lands.
  6. Potential to secure external research funding and experience in research areas such as genomics, epigenomics, transcriptomics, pharmacogenomics, proteomics, metabolomics, biomarker discovery, or microbiome studies, with the intention to address important biological and environmental problems.
