SPECIAL PROJECTS AND COMMUNICATIONS MANAGER

Salary Range: $70,000 - $90,000 /year

The VC-EDI, through partnership and collaboration, directs the campus efforts relative to diversity initiatives, which includes the work of the Campus Community Centers, as well as the efforts of the Center for Faculty Diversity and Inclusion.

Incumbent will assume special projects and communications management within VC-EDI.

Communications: Incumbent is responsible for positioning VC-EDI communications within the larger Enterprise. Incumbent works independently and in partnership with UC San Diego Communications to develop, oversee, implement, and maintain a comprehensive communications plan for VC-EDI. This includes written, visual, digital, and electronic communications. Incumbent researches, writes, and/or edits material for both internal and external audiences; including EDI websites, campus notices, talking points for leadership, news articles, brochures, press releases, and reports. Works with Chief of Staff to develop and execute organizational communication and market branding strategy. As needed, incumbent designs and implements information campaigns and advises the VC for EDI and other EDI personnel on comprehensive communication strategy, including responding to hate/bias incidents, crisis, and rapid response; advance planning for such incidents; and creating and disseminating written communications; and/or working with UC San Diego Communications staff to create written communications related to hate/bias. Incumbent is versed in relevant policies and procedures to help resolve a wide range of issues.

Project Management: Individual is a project management professional with a full understanding of project management frameworks and methods. Project scale ranges from small internal projects to campus-wide projects or initiatives. Incumbent’s role will often shift, depending on the scope and focus of the project, between serving as the lead (e.g., manager of the project) or as a highly engaged team member with specific responsibilities. Incumbent is always responsible for development and execution of the communication plan for the project including layout, editing, and coordination of printed and electronic materials.

Ideal candidates will have the ability to establish and maintain strong interpersonal relationships with students, faculty, alumni, staff, and local community members.

Must be willing to work extended hours as needed to address unplanned crisis and be available after hours for consultation and potential response by text, phone or in person. Occasional evenings and weekends may be required.

QUALIFICATIONS

• Experience creating, developing, and implementing long and short-term strategic communication plans. Advanced skills to advise and consult management on all aspects of communications, ranging from developing effective communication strategies to appropriately responding to inquiries regarding sensitive or complex issues or information.

• Experience with hate/bias crisis communications response.

• Experience performing in-depth and complex communications analysis on a wide range of equity, diversity, and inclusion issues.

• Knowledge of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion subject matter, including knowledge of the history and societal impacts of discrimination and unequal opportunity in the United States and how this impacts higher education. Knowledge of diversity and social justice issues including but not limited to: race, ethnicity, sex, gender identity, sexual-orientation, religious, and class background.

• Demonstrated fluency in lexical and programmatic EDI knowledge to effectively communicate, advocate, and advance mission. Proven ability to provide leadership in addressing complex and sensitive problems with tact and diplomacy.

• Demonstrated adeptness with a wide range of communication methods and tools including written, visual, and digital media (e.g., effective writing, web design, public speaking, MS Powerpoint).

• Ability to use discretion and maintain all confidentiality. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to effectively interact tactfully and diplomatically, yet assertively, with all segments of the campus and community.

• Proven ability to effectively, persuasively, and diplomatically collaborate at all organizational levels while maintaining confidentiality and exercising discretion.

• Strong skill in taking initiative to creatively identify and pitch story ideas to senior management and clients.

• Strong interpersonal skills including verbal and written communication, active listening, critical thinking, persuasiveness, advising, and counseling skills.

• Ability to communicate in writing and verbally. Proven knowledge of the fundamentals of writing, grammar, syntax, style, and punctuation and advanced skills to write clear, lively, engaging, compelling, and effective copy in a variety of styles appropriate to target audiences and the broader public.

• Demonstrated understanding of project management frameworks and methods, including crisis response and rapid response, and versed in relevant policies and procedures to help resolve a wide range of issues, including responding to hate/bias incidents.

• Strong skills to create clear, easy-to-navigate, informative, accurate, well-designed, and functional websites that provide web content consistent with the organization's message and in keeping with management directives and client objectives.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

• Job offer is contingent upon satisfactory clearance based on Background Check results.

• Duties may require direct contact with children (defined as individuals under the age of 18). Completion of the Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act (CANRA) form will be required.
