Job Title: Director of Land Grant Office of Sustainability
Reports To: Dean for Sustainability
Status: Full-time/ Regular/ Salary
Salary: $60,349 annual DOE
SUMMARY: The Director will be responsible for the implementation, development, administration, reporting and planning activities that strengthen the Tohono O’odham Community College (TOCC) academic programs through the Land Grant Office of Sustainability (LGOS). The position includes Extension and teaching. The Director will work closely with Extension Agent, Student’s Farm Manager, student interns, faculty and entities from the Tohono O’odham Nation. The Director will ensure that the goals and objectives of all programs are successfully met and will support the T-So:son (Our Core Values) including T-Wohocudadag – Our Beliefs, T-Apedag – Our Well-Being, T-Pi:k Elida – Our Deepest Respect and I-We:mta – Working Together.
- Manages and oversees staff, which includes prioritizing and assigning work; conducting performance evaluations; ensuring staff is trained; ensuring that employees follow policies and procedures; maintaining a healthy and safe working environment; and making hiring, termination, and disciplinary recommendations;
- Directs the implementation of internal operations for LGOS, which includes: planning, coordinating, administering, and evaluating programs, projects, processes, procedures, systems, standards; develops short- and long-term strategies and goals; ensuring compliance with Federal, State, and Local laws, regulations, codes, and/or standards.
- Teaches one course/semester related to Agriculture or Natural Resources and sustainability;
- Ensures departmental adherence and compatibility with organizational goals, objectives, and strategic initiatives.
- Directs and reviews a variety of multi-faceted information, data, forms, schedules, calendars, and reports; makes recommendations based on findings.
- Writes and develops grant proposals, continuations, responses, and reports.
- Oversees and manages grant programs, grant objectives, and resources.
- Networks with peer institutions in order to understand the evolving best practices and look for opportunities for collaboration to forward common goals.
- Develops and promotes programming that makes the connection between sustainability and inclusion and that engages students, faculty and staff of diverse backgrounds.
- Researches and analyzes a variety of complex data and information, including student database information; write and summarize findings in reports.
- Develops and maintains internal and external relationships; participates in/on a variety of meetings, committees, and/or other related groups to communicate information regarding LGOS, programs, areas of opportunity, and/or other information; represents assigned administrative area on committees, advocacy groups, and/or related groups.
- Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.
POSITION SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES MIGHT INCLUDE:
Project/Grant Programs may be responsible for:
- Serve as Project Director for the NIFA Equity and Extension grants and any other grants related to Sustainability of TOCC and the Tohono O’odham Nation;
- Serves as the College’s liaison for the Farm and Food Working Group;
- Attends and represents the College at the First Americans Land-Grant Consortium (FALCON) Annual Conference;
- Work with TOCC Administration to ensure principles of sustainability (e.g. local food procurement, sustainable agriculture, renewable energy, “green” technology), are considered in campus activities and planning;
TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
- Master's degree from an accredited college or university in Agriculture, Natural Resources, Environmental Science or related field; and two to three years of progressively responsible professional experience in Sustainability, Agriculture or Natural resources; including one or more years of administration (or acceptable combination of degree and experience); and a proven record of success in grant writing and management.
Additional Consideration May Be Given To Individuals with the Following Qualifications:
- Ph.D. degree in Agriculture, Natural Resources, Environmental Science or related field.
- Ability to speak and understand O’odham and/or Spanish.
- Knowledge and understanding in the history and contemporary issues facing Native peoples.
- Valid Arizona Driver’s license with no DUI's or major traffic offenses within the past three years.
- Must successfully pass a background check and Fingerprint Clearance Card.
- Managerial principles and practices;
- Administrative program oversight principles, practices, and techniques;
- Program development, planning, and administration principles and practices;
- Applicable Federal, State, and local laws, rules, regulations, codes, and/or statutes;
- Research methods;
- Policy and procedure development practices;
- Troubleshooting and solving complex program issues;

- Directing, monitoring, and evaluating administrative programs at a College-wide level;
- Planning, coordinating, and implementing program components and activities;
- Analyzing processes and making recommendations for improvement;
- Researching, analyzing, and applying relevant information to the development of Sustainability programs;
- Interpreting and applying applicable laws, rules, and regulations;
- Preparing grant reports;
- Managing and administering grant budgets;
- Monitoring and evaluating the work of lower-level staff;
- Exceptional oral and written communication capacities, interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with subordinates, coworkers, supervisor, the general public, etc. sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction.
