A mission-driven, solutions-oriented, curious learner who will provide legal counsel to Arabella’s nonprofit client-facing team 

Are you interested in starting your legal career in the nonprofit sector? Are you mission-driven, solutions oriented, and a curious learner? We are searching for a new, detail-oriented Junior Staff Counsel to join us in the General Counsel’s office. This is a great opportunity for a recent law school graduate who is eager to learn and practice across a spectrum of legal matters, including contracts and nonprofit tax law. 

Arabella’s General Counsel’s office is responsible for providing timely, coordinated, and thoughtful legal advice to internal clients on a wide variety of regulatory, compliance, and risk-management matters that is grounded in applicable laws and tailored to Arabella’s business needs. The General Counsel’s office also provides legal support to a variety of nonprofit organizations that Arabella Advisors manages, including the New Venture Fund, a 501(c)(3) charity, and Sixteen Thirty Fund, a 501(c)(4) public welfare organization. Under guidance of the General Counsel, the Junior Staff Counsel will provide counsel to Arabella staff in the Managed Organizations unit on contracts, grantmaking, intellectual property issues, governance matters, and other compliance issues that arise from the department’s activities.  The Junior Staff Counsel will also be responsible for keeping contracts, policies, and procedures up to date, consistent with the law and best practices. Our successful candidate will be able to navigate between corporate and nonprofit environments and provide guidance across a broad cross section of issues and subjects. 

Essential Responsibilities

  • Assist and counsel client account teams with reviewing and evaluating legal and business risks arising from contracts and vendor agreements. 
  • Work under the supervision of the General Counsel to provide accurate and timely advice to staff on contracts, Arabella policies, grants, IP, and nonprofit law issues.
  • Assist the Compliance team’s efforts with state registration and reporting obligations for several nonprofits, including charitable solicitation registration, state tax exemption, and foreign corporation registration.
  • Assist senior attorneys in resolving routine and novel legal questions.
  • Assist with developing and conducting trainings for staff on legal rules and compliance procedures.
  • Conduct research and prepare analyses as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

 To Be Successful In This Role, You’ll Need:

  • J.D. from an accredited law school, and 0-1 years of experience in a legal role
  • License to practice law (or eligible to obtain one) in a jurisdiction with an Arabella office (NY, CA, DC, NC, and/or IL)
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Strong willingness to dive in and assist on an as needed basis
  • Ability to work independently and proactively identify and prioritize needs with minimal supervision
  • Ability to provide excellent service to clients, including being able to diagnose and anticipate difficult service challenges, provide proactive and effective client-centered solutions, pass along service lessons to teammates, and demonstrate a strong understanding of the client’s perspective.
  • The ability to effectively manage projects, proactively problem solve, and ensure quality control
  • A high level of emotional intelligence and the ability to use that intelligence to appropriately adapt to stakeholders’ needs
  • The ability to effectively help communicate complex and nuanced messages to a variety of audiences, including adapting style, tone and content to meet various needs.
  • Positive attitude and team-oriented ethic; the ability to work cooperatively and inclusively with others to achieve shared goals, including supporting efforts that promote a safe and welcoming culture, providing timely and constructive feedback, and highlighting and sharing significant and new knowledge across the team
  • The ability to use available resources and feedback to continually develop mastery in your role and facilitate team learning, including a willingness to request feedback and incorporate it to improve individual performance and to seek out and participate in career-relevant learning activities
  • The ability to take ownership and be creative and solutions-oriented when encountering challenges that don’t have obvious answers, including the ability to solve challenges independently
  • The ability to integrate DEI into work processes and demonstrate understanding of how oppression, privilege, and power present in interactions and work

 Other Highly Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • Demonstrated interest in learning about 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(4) nonprofit law.
  • Interest in learning about lobbying, employment, and intellectual property law.

Total Rewards (compensation and benefits)

This is a full-time position. We offer a competitive and holistic total rewards package that includes salary, bonus, and benefits. Our base salaries are based on a blend of similar sized organizations from different sectors, including nonprofits, foundations, and professional service firms. They are also based on local market rates and differentiated by geography. All full-time staff are eligible for our generous benefits package on their first day of employment:

While this position must be based in Washington, DC; Durham, NC; or New York, NY, please note that due to COVID-19, all Arabella Advisors' offices are closed, and we continue to temporarily work in a remote environment.When we reopen -- currently anticipated in late 2021 -- we will be returning to work with a hybrid workplace strategy to ensure continued flexibility for our staff, while deepening our strong culture rooted in collaboration and in-person interactions between colleagues.
