Job Description

The American Indian Higher Education Consortium (AIHEC) is the collective spirit and unifying voice of our nation's tribal colleges and universities (TCUs). AIHEC provides leadership and influences public policy on American Indian and Alaska Native higher education issues through advocacy, research, and programmatic initiatives; promotes and strengthens Indigenous languages, cultures, communities, lands, and tribal nations; and through its unique position, serves member institutions and emerging TCUs. The Tribal College Journal (TCJ) is AIHEC’s quarterly and online publication, recognized nationally as the premier publication on American Indian education.


The Communications Associate will help to create and promote the identity, efforts, needs, and successes of AIHEC, AIHEC’s Tribal College Journal (TCJ), and the TCUs to member institutions, TCU students and potential students, stakeholders, and the general public  through the creation and distribution of social media, podcasts, news releases,  brochures, and other means.

Essential Functions:

  • Work with leadership and staff to create and implement marketing plans
  • Plan, prepare, and distribute original promotional content, including articles, news and press releases, email, blog and other updates
  • Oversee, produce, and disseminate, from concept to completion, a broad array of digital and/or print promotional and communication materials
  • Regularly update social media platforms (i.e., Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and website, as needed) to advance TCU messaging
  • Ensure that all communication materials present a clear, unified, and positive image, using appropriate branding; build, expand, and engage a reader audience for TCJ
  • Promote and attend special events and functions; promote and report on organizational milestones and activities such as goals and projects, new products and services, community service activities and new hires, promotions, and retirements
  • Arrange for photography and/or press coverage for special events
  • Develop, implement, and track direct mail and online subscription and donation campaigns for TCJ
  • Create and implement surveys, focus groups, and other reader research to help inform TCJ’s editorial and advertising decisions
  • Work to build and engage TCJ’s online reader audience through social media, special contests (i.e., trivia contest in the fall, photo contests for students, etc.)
  • Market and identify new venues for reviews of Tribal College Press publications
  • In coordination with AIHEC Finance Department and TCJ, establish and monitor marketing budget
  • Other related duties as assigned

Required Education, Experience and Attributes (minimum requirements):

  • Bachelor’s degree in related field required; relevant experience may be substituted for educational requirement
  • Excellent verbal, written, and electronic communication skills
  • Extremely proficient with Microsoft Office Suite and desktop publishing software
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Collaborative, engaging and personable
  • 2+ years of experience in marketing, publications, or a related field required


This position reports to the TCJ editor and Core Support Coordinator
