Spring 2021 Conservation Internship

Overview

The Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) is a non-profit environmental advocacy organization. We use law, science, and the support of 3.1 million members and online activists to protect the planet's wildlife and wild places and to ensure the rights of all people to clean air, clean water, and healthy communities. NRDC was founded in 1970 and our staff helped write some of America's bedrock environmental laws, including the Clean Water Act, and many of the implementing regulations. Today, our staff of more than 700 lawyers, scientists, economists, policy advocates, communications experts, and others work across the United States and internationally from our offices in New York; Washington, D.C.; Chicago; Santa Monica; San Francisco; Bozeman, Montana; and Beijing.

Position Summary

NRDC is seeking an intern to work with our Nature Program in NRDC’s Northern Rockies Office in Bozeman, Montana. This internship will support NRDC’s advocacy work on wildlife and other conservation issues in the Northern Rockies. A remote work arrangement will be offered for this position.

The intern will lead an exploratory project on the significance of beaver and the status of beaver conservation efforts on tribal lands in the Northern Rockies. This work will involve networking, information gathering, and developing a communication tool to share findings about tribal relationships to beaver in terms of history, culture and practice. The internship will begin March 15, 2021 or soon thereafter. We are seeking applicants that can work full time (35-hour-per-week for 10 weeks) but are open to negotiating a part-time position depending on the right candidate’s needs. 

Responsibilities

• Research beaver conservation and restoration efforts on tribal lands in the Northern Rockies;
• Conduct outreach and interviews on topics related to the cultural, spiritual, and ecological significance of beavers;
• Summarize findings in writing
• Help inform future wildlife conservation efforts; and
• Gain an understanding of wildlife conservation work by assisting Nature program staff with various projects.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience;
• Resourceful, able to manage multiple projects, and motivated to succeed;
• Excellent written and verbal communications skills;
• An interest in relationship building and learning from diverse perspectives in the wildlife community;
• A passion for conservation issues in the West and alignment with NRDC’s mission.
