About the Position

The Student Retention and Graduation Specialist provides academic advising and related student academic support services for students in the Connie L. Lurie College of Education. The specialist provides leadership and coordination of the holistic advising model and programming in support of student retention, identity development, sense of belonging, and success through timely graduation. This includes proactive outreach and support to targeted student populations who do not meet established benchmarks and/or are on academic probation. The specialist is an integral part of the Student Success Center team providing professional advising support for recruiting and orienting new students.

 

Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • In collaboration with the Director, facilitate the design of a holistic advising model that will strengthen student success and outcomes. Implement this model by conducting complex student service advising sessions, both individually and in group settings, as demanded by student needs. Including, but not limited to probationary program advising (LEAP), and assessment and advising of acute financial needs (Hardship Grant).
  • Develop, implement, and assess workshops and programs designed to facilitate students’ timely progress toward degree completion.
  • Utilize advanced relational skills and abilities to support and facilitate the success of identified student groups, e.g., underrepresented students, first-generation students, probationary, disqualified, etc.
  • Prepare, implement, and assess intervention plans to support the success of students who are at-risk based upon academic standing and/or who do not achieve particular benchmarks, including satisfactory GPA, credits earned, major progress, are on academic probation and/or disqualified.
  • Train peer mentors in the areas relevant to their assignment, coordinate their activities, and assess their individual effectiveness.
  • Stay current with the research literature and field on topics specifically addressing student advisement and retention, and recommend alternatives to current practices as needed.
